Mervin H. Meyer, 89, of Sumner, died early Tuesday morning, March 22, 2016, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2016, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Norman Bauer officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 24th at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Memorials may be made in his name to St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner.
Mervin Herman, son of Louis and Ella (Fasse) Meyer was born January 18, 1927, in Black Hawk County, Iowa. He was baptized February 6, 1927, in Black Hawk County. Mervin received his education at St. Paul’s Siegel Lutheran School near Tripoli. On July 24, 1949, he was united in marriage with Marjorie Strempke at the Little Brown Church, near Nashua. Mervin and Marjorie moved to a farm in the Spring Fountain area near Sumner in 1958. They remained there until moving into town in 1978. In addition to farming, Mervin worked for five years at Deere & Co. and later did welding for Construction Machinery Co., both in Waterloo. Mervin enjoyed fishing and repairing various pieces of machine shop equipment. He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner.
In addition to his wife, Marjorie of Sumner he is survived by his four children, David (Misako) Meyer, Patty Jungling, Robert (Tammie) Meyer, and Jackie (Lee) Ridge, all of Sumner; seven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.
Mervin was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Wilbert and Arlon.
